The Implication Problem for Functional Dependencies in Complete Xml Documents

چکیده
With the growing use of XML as a format for the permanent storage of data, the study of functional dependencies in XML (XFDs) is of fundamental importance in understanding how to effectively design XML databases without redundancy or update problems. We investigate a central problem in dependency theory, that of determining when a set of XFDs logically implies another XFD in the context of XML documents with no missing information. The first contribution of the article is to provide an axiom system for XFD implication that we prove to be sound and complete, and we then present a quadratic time closure algorithm for XFD implication. The second contribution is to investigate the implication problem for XFDs in the presence of a Document Type Definition (DTD). We show that for a class of DTDs called ‘simple’ DTDs, the implication problem for a set of XFDs and a ‘simple’ DTD can be converted to the implication problem for a set of XFDs alone, and so is axiomatizable and efficiently solvable by the first contribution. We do this by augmenting the original set of XFDs with additional XFDs generated from the structure of the DTD.

In this paper we address the problem of how to extend the deenition of functional dependencies (FDs) in incomplete relations to XML documents. There are two complementary approaches to deening functional dependencies (FDs) in incomplete relational databases. The rst approach, called the weak satisfaction approach, deenes a FD to be weakly satissed in an incomplete relation if there is at least ...
متن کاملThe Implication Problem for Unary Functional Dependencies in XML
XML is of great importance in information storage and retrieval because of its recent emergence as a standard for data representation and interchange on the Internet. However XML provides little semantic content and as a result several papers have addressed the topic of how to improve the semantic expressiveness of XML. Among the most important of these approaches has been that of deening integ...
متن کاملXML Functional Dependencies Based on Tree Homomorphisms
Functional dependencies form an important class of integrity constraints which has been well studied in the context of relational databases. Recently, the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has emerged as a popular and flexible standard for modelling and managing data in a variety of domains. Although several attempts have been made to generalise the concept of functional dependencies to the cont...
